Consumer Reports Magazine Ranks Fort Washington Medical Center Among D.C.'s Safest Hospitals

Oxon Hill, Md. (April 1, 2014) - Fort Washington Medical Center ranked among the top safest local hospitals, according to Consumer Reports magazine.

Consumer Reports recently investigated hospital safety in the United States for the first time. In the D.C. region, 34 hospitals were rated and only five scored 60 or higher on the magazine's 100-point hospital safety score.

The top local hospitals include:

  • Calvert Memorial Hospital, Prince Frederick, Md. (68)
  • Fort Washington Medical Center, Fort Washington, Md. (61)
  • Virginia Hospital Center, Arlington, Va. (61)
  • MedStar Montgomery Medical Center, Olney, Md. (60)
  • Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center, Woodbridge, Va. (60)
The five categories used to measure hospital safety were mortality, readmission, overuse of C-T scans, hospital acquired infections and communication. The Consumer Reports investigation followed a recent survey which showed that over 400,000 Americans die every year as a result of medical errors.

Hear it from Our Patients

Jody Beard has suffered from knee pain for many years. Not anymore, thanks to knee replacement surgery through the Fort Washington Medical Center Joint Replacement Program.
This surgery has changed my life. I no longer lay on shopping carts for support or agonize when walking on concrete. After two knee replacements, now I am all over the place. I’m walking around the school where I work without pain. My granddaughter says I don’t walk like a penguin anymore. I have my surgeon and the FWMC staff to thank for that!
