Diabetes Education Offered in Fort Washington

As a complex disease that impacts nearly 19 million Americans, diabetes requires daily self-management. From making the best food choices to staying physically active, managing diabetes includes a number of different elements. Individuals who have diabetes must also be able to regularly monitor their blood sugar and take prescribed medications as directed. At Fort Washington Medical Center, we understand that managing diabetes can be challenging. That is why we offer a Diabetes Self-Management and Education program for patients, whether they have recently been diagnosed, supporting a loved one with diabetes or have been dealing with diabetes their whole life.

Importance of Diabetes Management

Why is it so important for you to regularly manage your diabetes? If not properly monitored, your health could suffer. Mismanaged diabetes can lead to heart disease, eye disorders, kidney disease, nerve damage, and other issues. FWMC can partner with you to help you understand your condition and how to effectively take care of your health, allowing you to live a full and healthy life regardless of your diabetes diagnosis.

We offer diabetes education through personal one-on-one appointments and classes with our certified diabetes educator.

Some of the key educational elements include:

  • The importance of meal planning
  • Making smart choices when dining out
  • Achieving better results with medication
  • Improving physical activity
  • Social and psychological aspects of diabetes
  • Taking control of the disease for a healthier life
  • Having a full team (physician, nutritionist, diabetes educator, etc.)

We offer education resources to the public, including patients from our neighboring areas. If you would like to learn more about the diabetes education opportunities at our local Fort Washington hospital, we encourage you to give us a call today at (240) 766-4197.

Hear it from Our Patients

Jody Beard has suffered from knee pain for many years. Not anymore, thanks to knee replacement surgery through the Fort Washington Medical Center Joint Replacement Program.
This surgery has changed my life. I no longer lay on shopping carts for support or agonize when walking on concrete. After two knee replacements, now I am all over the place. I’m walking around the school where I work without pain. My granddaughter says I don’t walk like a penguin anymore. I have my surgeon and the FWMC staff to thank for that!
